COMEDY: Comedy In The Dark feat Gary Delaney + David Morgan + Lloyd Griffith + Johnny Pelham, Udderbelly, 5 May
The Udderbelly fun rolls on with this holy cow of a show, whose outline is quite simple; switch off the lights, sit back, and laugh darkly at top humourist Gary Delaney (aka Mr Sarah Millican), witty ‘Pretty’ aesthete David Morgan, amiable everyman Lloyd Griffith and nervy comic Johnny Pelham. MUSIC: Pop Noire feat A Dead Forest Index + ZZZs + Gemma Thompson, The Shacklewell Arms, 5 May
This serious fix of Bank Holiday Pop Noire comes care of the label’s curators, night-creatures Savages, who play hosts to the shady sounds of Auckland duo A Dead Forest Index, Japan noise trio ZZZs, and one of their own, solo Savage Gemma Thompson. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: Yellow Face, The Shed (National Theatre), 5-24 May
Actress Gemma Chang stars in this play based on the real-life experiences of its writer, Tony-winning David Henry Hwang, who led rallies against the casting of Jonathan Pryce, a white actor, as ‘Yellow Face’, a Eurasian character, in a 1990 Broadway adaptation of ‘Miss Saigon’. Hwang’s sharp, satirical script asks what race really means, both in terms of its portrayals in politics and the media, and the ways we regard it as humans. Details and tickets here.
