Sunday 13 April 2014 in London
By TW Editorial | Published on Monday 7 April 2014
TODAY IN LONDON, ThisWeek’s tipped events feature a reel of comical film classics, the Savoy’s go-to swingtime jazzists Alex Mendham & His Orchestra, and a band – nay rabble – of stand-ups…
COMEDY: Second Sunday New Material Club Band feat Sara Pascoe + Jessica Fostekew + Caroline Mabey + Joel Dommett, The Grove Bar, 13 Apr
One of those ‘as it says on the tin’ nights, as the divine triad of Sara Pascoe, Jessica Fostekew and Caroline Mabey audition a batch of honorary players for their New Material Club Band. Today’s aspirants, since you ask, are toothy TV smartass Joel Dommett, likeable land-girl Hatty Ashdown, boozy (in his words) comic Tommy Rowson and busy stand-up Amir Khoshsokhan. Details and tickets here.
FILM/COMEDY: Welcome To Chronicwood – Comedy Classics, Bussey Building, 13
The Bussey Building houses this pop-up picturehouse c/o its once-monthly Chronicwood film club. In keeping with this edition’s comedic theme, today’s nine-hour billing includes showings of ‘Dr Strangelove’, Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein’ and, at 9pm, a watershed screening of ‘The Big Lebowski’. Popcorn, drinks, ‘monster sausage rolls’ and a 30 minute interlude of stand-up from up-and-coming locals are also on the bill. Details and tickets here.
MUSIC: Alex Mendham & His Orchestra, St Pancras Station, 13 Apr (pictured)
The Savoy Hotel’s 11-man in-lobby orchestra, Alex Mendham and friends, slides by St Pancras to play a programme of hot jazz and roaring pop hits from back in the roaring 1920s. The show costs nothing to watch, Fortunum & Mason are doing some food on the side, and you can make like Gatsby and have a dance if you like. Details here.
