And the LDN-based events the ThisWeek team is tipping today are…
FILM: Routes – Dancing To New Orleans | BFI Southbank | 31 Aug
British director Alex Reuben’s intimate doc follows a road-trip he made south from New England to a post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, shooting film all the way. Closing off the BFI’s ‘Gotta Dance, Gotta Dance!’ programme, ‘Dancing To New Orleans’ celebrates The States’s diverse dance lineage, and finds Reuben filming everyday Americans as they express themselves via a variety of steps and styles. The main film screening is followed by ‘Que Pasa’ and ‘Line Dance’, a pair of animated shorts also by Reuben, and ‘Newsreel: Melt Down’, which he recorded live during 2011’s LDN-based Dance Umbrella festival. Details and tickets here.
MUSIC: Freddie Gibbs | XOYO | 31 Aug
Now one of the hip hop world’s most coveted collaborators in light of his and Madlib’s acclaimed ‘Piñata’ LP, no-frills Indiana rapper Freddie Gibbs appears tonight in solo mode ahead of a disc that’s all his own, the forthcoming ‘Eastside Slim’. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: Titus Andronicus | Peckham Multi-Storey Car Park | 31 Aug – 20 Sep
The first piece of theatre (apparently) to be staged inside Peckham’s suitably brutalist, Frank’s-capped Multi-Storey Car Park, Bold Tendencies’ adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless vengeance tragedy features beatboxing, Parkour (aka free-running), and a community choir. Details and tickets here.
