The UK premiere of acclaimed writer Tommy Murphy’s ‘Strangers In Between’ is part of an ongoing exploration over at the King’s Head of contemporary Australian playwrights. It’s about a vulnerable sixteen year old, who has fled his rural home and headed for bright lights of Sydney, and while it looks at the highs and lows of being gay in present-day Australia, it sounds as though it’s got very universal themes: coming of age, friendship, and how our past comes back to haunt us. Big Girl’s Blouse | Soho Theatre | 22-25 Jun
The multi award-winning Kate O’Donnell brings this acclaimed creation to Soho Theatre for a short run only, so make sure you don’t miss it. Created in collaboration with Olivier Award-winning director Mark Whitelaw, the show uses humour, music and costume to tell the story of the performer’s life as transgender. Sideways – the play | St James Theatre | 16 May-9 Jul
Oh, good lord, I can’t believe I almost missed the fact that a production of ‘Sideways’ was on in the capital. It’s one of my favourite movies, and I would love to see a stage play of it. Which is what this is. It may be a bit different – the script is adapted by Rex Pickett, the writer of the novel that inspired the film – but I bet this is excellent, and touching, and funny. And… well… it’s about wine. Lovely wine. Apart from the f**king merlot, obv. So go on. Unless, unlike me, you knew it was on and have seen it already. If not, get thee to this page here.
