And today’s ThisWeek-tipped, LDN-based events are…

Dark and Lovely | Ovalhouse | 7-10 Oct
The talented Selina Thompson presents this exploration of afro hair: the politics of it, the history, what it can tell us about what it’s like to be black, British and female. Very interesting and important subject matter, especially in the light of the way white standards of beauty dominate our culture and media. See this page here for more info and to book tickets.

London Film Festival | Various venues | 7-18 Oct
Yay, the London Film Festival starts today, so you’ve 240 films to see, and you’ve got twelve days to see them all. Don’t worry, though, I won’t be critical if you don’t manage to make it to all of them. Virtually impossible to suggest highlights, really, in a short little recommendation piece like this (if pushed, I’d suggest there’s a lot of interesting looking stuff in the Debate strand) so I suggest you go here to have a browse of the extensive programme.

Political Mother – The Choreographers Cut | Brixton Academy | 7-8 Oct
Hofesh Shechter’s ’Political Mother’ was first staged back in 2010 to much, much, much, critical acclaim, and the hip and gritty dance piece has been revamped for this new version, which features forty international musicians and dancers. It’s the final event of Hofest, which has been celebrating with a number of stagings of the choreographer’s work, so don’t miss this one. More info and tickets here.
