Three To Stream 19-25 May: Upcoming Online Events, Already-Available Theatre, Miscellaneous Interesting Things To Do

By | Published on Friday 15 May 2020

We’re still recommending great culture online while London’s venues remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of these online shows are free to access but with options to make donations. If you can afford to support the performers and producers behind this entertainment that would be brilliant.

UPCOMING ONLINE EVENTS

Collywobblers Comedy Lockdown Online Zoom Special | JokePit | 22 May
Now that we are who-can-even-remember how many weeks into lockdown-living and no-live-entertainment, I’m sure a great many of you will be up for this: it’s a comedy-night-via-Zoom with a fab line-up that’s happening this week and at a reasonable price. Comedians lined up are Phil Nichol, Nigel Ng, Yuriko Kotani, Joshua Robertson and MC Sion James, with special guest Tony Ukulele. Click here.

Love Letters At Home | Fuel Theatre | 20 May-26 Jun (pictured)
Originally a venue-staged thing, this is an interactive and audience-involving online version of ‘Love Letters At Home’ that I think is probably best explained by Fuel Theatre themselves: “[It’s] an intimate participatory event in which audience and performers offer dedications and declarations of love, past and present. It is collaboratively written with its audience, who temporarily become a community of close friends across the performance”. See this page here for more.

The Interminable Suicide Of Gregory Church | Daniel Kitson | 18-24 May
Fans of Daniel Kitson and his critically acclaimed theatrical pieces will be pleased to hear that he’s to stream a recording of ‘The Interminable Suicide Of Gregory Church’ this week. Tickets are limited, and I believe there’s been a bit of a ‘kerfuffle’ regarding ease of booking, but hopefully that’s now sorted. See this page here for info.

ALREADY-AVAILABLE THEATRE

Blood + Chocolate | Pilot Theatre, Slung Low and York Theatre Royal
This has been available to view on YouTube since long before lockdown, so you might have already seen it, but maybe not. And if not, now’s the time to take in this recording of a highly acclaimed show about the changing landscape and social mores of York at the time of World War I. Head this way to see it.

Come To Where I Am | Paines Plough
I heard a while ago that part of Paines Plough’s response to the closure of theatres was to commission a host of new short plays with the theme of home and our relationships with it, but I thought I would wait until some online content was available to mention it to you. Anyway, one short play is currently available via YouTube, ‘She Left Home For A While’, by the very highly regarded Simon Stephens, performed by the excellent David Bradley. See it here.

The Encounter | Complicité / Bristol Old Vic | until 22 May (pictured)
You need to see this one by Friday because, well, it’s only available on-demand until then. This is Simon McBurney’s solo show focusing on the experiences of National Geographic photographer Loren McIntyre, who in 1969 became lost in a remote part of the Brazilian rainforest while searching for the Mayoruna people. See this page here for info (and don’t forget your earphones).

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING THINGS TO DO

Reweirding: The Alchemy of Us – How Humans and Matter Transformed One Another | Conway Hall | 25 May
Another talk from Conway Hall for you to take in now, and this one sounds rather intriguing! “Ainissa Ramirez shows how materials were shaped by inventors, but also how those materials shaped culture, chronicling each invention and its consequences – intended and unintended”. See this page here for more information and to register.

#BushPhotoChallenge | Bush Theatre Community Team
If you’re struggling for creative things to do right now, here’s something you can try: Bush Theatre’s community team have recruited writers to pose weekly photo challenges for audiences via Twitter. You send in photos based on each writer’s theme and they will choose and share their favourites from those submitted. So, something to do indoors, in the garden, out for your daily walk… and then enjoy everyone else’s photos on the theme too. Check the #BushPhotoChallenge tag on Twitter.

ImagiNation | Theatre Centre/Theatre503 (pictured)
And here’s something else to devote a chunk of your time to, a really interesting project from Theatre Centre and Theatre503 that seeks to engage with anyone and everyone. Nineteen brilliant playwrights have each written plays for the project and you are all encouraged to record your own performances of them, potentially for inclusion in a short film. See this page here to read all about it.
