TODAY IN LONDON, ThisWeek’s tipped events feature masterful Royal Ballet choreog Christopher Wheeldon, calcium-rich Udderbelly comedians Tony Law, Andrew Maxwell and Vikki Stone, and the writer of the much-lauded ‘This House’, playwright James Graham…
COMEDY: Udderbelly Opening Gala, Udderbelly Southbank, 10 Apr
The capsized purple ungulate moo-st commonly known as the Udderbelly, which is back, on its back, on the Southbank for a long, hot summer of artistic thrills, throws its annual first-night gala in the company of some of the acts who’ll be titivating its teats over the next twelve weeks. Like, for instance, cash-cow comics Andrew Maxwell, Tony Law, Brendon Burns, Phil Nichol, Mark Dolan and Vikki Stone, the cast of musical improv biz-kids The Showstoppers, and Victorian magicians Morgan And West. Details and tickets here.
DANCE: The Winter’s Tale, Royal Opera House, 10 Apr – 8 May (pictured)
The Royal Ballet and Christopher Wheeldon look to make light work of this unenviable (and unseasonal) dance-interpretation of Shakespeare’s frost-bitten romance, the company’s first adaptation of one of the Bard’s plays since Macmillan’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ in 1965. Leading ballerinas Lauren Cuthbertson and Marianela Nuñez alternate the part of the beautiful Queen Hermione, whilst Edward Watson and Thiago Soares share Leontes, King of Sicily. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: Privacy, Donmar Warehouse, 10 Apr – 31 May
James Graham’s new play, a pressing investigation into the ‘sharing of personal information’ in the digital age, taps real interviews with analysts, writers and politicians to ask the audience straight-out: how much do we really give away about ourselves online? Details and tickets here.
