Wozzeck

TODAY IN LONDON Aisling Bea and a haunted house-ful of comedians, the scary speak-easies of the Storytellers Club, silver screen fear-mongerers Backyard Cinema and British baritone Simon Keenlyside as Berg’s ‘Wozzecl’ all feature in the following TW-recommended events…

COMEDY: Storytellers’ Club Ghost Stories Special, Kings Place, 31 Oct
Ghosts, ghouls, goblins and the like form the topic du jour of this special Storytellers’ seance. Congenial host Sarah Bennetto joins 4* comic ‘headless’ Colin Hoult, ‘The Office’ spook Ewen Macintosh, sock hauntee John-Luke Roberts and Storytellers’ Club regular James ‘The Ripper’ Dowdeswell round a fake campfire to summon some serious spoken-word horror. Details and tickets here.

COMEDY: Shambles Presents The Rossy Horror Show, Aces & Eights, 31 Oct
Apple-cheeked Aisling Bea leads a gaggle of freakish stand-up fiends, not least BBC3-featured sideshow curiosities Twins Macabre, ‘Celebrity Bedlam’-ite Lee Kern, comedy entrepreneur Harry Deansway and TV ‘Pranker’ Ross Lee as MC, in this scary variety carnival. Details and tickets here.

FILM: Backyard Cinema Apocalypse, Camden Lock Market, 31 Oct – 2 Nov
Team Backyard Cinema plays on earthlings’ latent fear of a brain-eating epidemic with this live-action simulation, in which fright-proof cinema-goers (and an accompanying SWAT team) have to find their way to a ‘safe zone’, avoiding the swarms of zombies. Once safe, their prize is a scary movie, with ‘Zombieland’, ‘Evil Dead’, ’28 Days Later’ and ‘Stake Land’ all on offer. Details and tickets here.

OPERA: Wozzeck, Royal Opera House, 31 Oct – 15 Nov (pictured)
Keith Warner directs this Olivier-winning staging of Berg’s century-old psychological opera, whose title character, voiced by Brit baritone Simon Keenlyside, is a down-at-heel solider struggling to support his lover, even as she’s being wooed by his cruel Drum Major. Poor old Wozzeck. Details and tickets here.
