Katie Sims – Opening Gambit, Hoxton Art Gallery, 12 Oct – 10 Nov
The promising (and Midas Award-winning) Katie Sims presents her pivotal first solo show ‘Opening Gambit’, a tribute – part subversive, part sincere – to the Renaissance and Baroque masters. Look out for her ‘geometric motifs’ and ‘organic and ethereal’ brush strokes, or else for the free private view cocktails. Only joking, there aren’t any cocktails. London Irish Comedy Festival, London Irish Centre, 12- 14 Oct
Abandoman’s hip hop improv forms the progressive overture to the LIC’s craic-packed comedy festival, as also features Neil Delamere, Andrew Maxwell, Cariad Lloyd and a Sharon Hayden-compered musical comedy spectacular. All three-day listings here.
Sean Lock – Work In Progress, Leicester Square Theatre, 12 Oct – 11 Nov
Sean Lock strives at self-improvement in the first of seven Work In Progress sessions, each one a great chance to see a great comedian for less £££s. Tickets may still be available via this link.

Tarek Atoui – La Suite, Serpentine Gallery, 12 Oct (pictured)
Lebanese sound artist Tarek Atoui inaugurates the Serpentine’s multi-arts ‘Memory Marathon’ with his Park Night special ‘La Suite’, a five-hour composition drawing from classical Arab music. He’s accompanied by fourteen musicians from various disciplines, not least hip hop, experimental and electronic in a melange of the modern and the traditional. Details and £10 tickets here.
City Showcase, various venues, 9-13 Oct
Things are getting very busy at new music festival City Showcase today. On the workshop side, TW’s own Chris Cooke, in his CMU Business Editor guise, will be leading a debate on the future of the music industry, plus Lemar and music industry veteran Korda Marshall will both be in conversation.
