Esteemed late composer Marvin Hamlisch’s seven-Tony-Award-meriting stage musical ‘Sweet Smell Of Success’ has its first proper British airing at the Arcola Theatre this eve at 7.30pm precisely. London Storytelling Festival, Leicester Square Theatre, 9-18 Nov
Starting tonight with a spoken overture by new-wave raconteuse Rachel Rose Reid – who’ll be posing as Hans Christian Anderson to talk about fairytale love stories – this anecdote-filled festival with a comedic bent will also feature improvised story ‘jams’, all-in workshops and spotlight cameos by John-Luke Roberts, Jo Neary, Asher Treleaven, Martin Dockery. Nights Of Noir, Old Vic Tunnels, 9-11 Nov
Burrow into the Old Vic’s sub-basement season for a dark intro into film noir. Tonight’s a la carte cinema programme comprises ‘Kiss Me Deadly’ and ‘Blue Velvet’; while ‘Fargo’, ‘Night Of The Hunter’ and Kubrick’s ‘The Killing’ will also be shown over the weekend, each featuring pre-screening events and Q&As. Sci-Fi London East, Stratford Picturehouse, 9-11 Nov
London’s premier SF film festival teleports to Stratford for the GB premiere of high-stakes thriller ‘The Human Race’, also screening ‘Crawlspace’, ‘Antiviral’, Jean-Baptiste Leonetti’s dystopian debut feature ‘Carre Blanc’ and, for insomniac toon fanatics, an anime all-nighter. ‘Constellations’ by Nick Payne – one of the Royal Court’s graduating class of 2012 – sets its telescopic sights on a relationship portrayed by son-of-Timothy Rafe Spall and the inimitable Sally Hawkins.
