Since there’s such a lot happening in London today, and not much time to do it… I’ll fast-forward this intro straight to the specifics…

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Gráinne Maguire And Pals, Camden Head, 3 Dec (pictured)
Presenting top-quality Camden comedy at the bargain price of £1, the charmingly batty MC Gráinne Maguire persuades class acts like Norwegian misanthrope Daniel Simonsen, promising comic Suzi Ruffell, a cat’s BFF Pattie Brewster, and “Faustian” disciplinarian Tania Edwards to be her one-night pals. And did I mention that all costs £1. £1! Info here.

TODAY’S FILM CHOICES

Ian Helliwell Presents: Experimental Amateurs, Cafe Oto, 3 Dec
AV artist/filmmaker Ian Helliwell screens a series of rarely-seen reels from his own archives. Amongst the filmic curiosities being shown tonight; scratch animator Stuart Wynn Jones’ 1956 opus ‘Short Spell’ and FC Judd’s time-lapse mini movie ‘Mad Motors’, circa 1974. Information and £4 advance passes via this link.

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

Cart Barat, Ed Harcourt and Leila Moss play Beck’s ‘Song Reader’, Rough Trade East, 3 Dec
Beck apparently isn’t all that fussed about playing/recording the songs that appear in his new sheet music book ‘Song Reader’, but fortunately, ex Libertine Carl Barat, songwriter Ed Harcourt and The Duke Spirit’s Leila Moss are, and will be playing selected titles from the collection in-store at the Brick Lane-based Rough Trade East tonight. Entrance is via wristband only and the majority of wristbands are only available if you buy a copy of ‘Song Reader’. Still, if that sounds like something you’d like to do, go to this web page for details.

TODAY’S SPOKEN WORD CHOICES

NT Platforms presents… An Evening With Private Eye, Olivier Theatre, 3 Dec
Tonight, the NT trains its Platform spotlight on Private Eye editor Ian Hislop, who’ll be talking in a satirical fashion about choice moments in 2012, with added commentary by Harry Enfield, Craig Brown, Lewis Macleod, Jan Ravens and John Sessions. Tickets here.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

Machines For Living, Battersea Arts Centre, 3-8 Dec
Blossoming theatre troupes Let Slip and Crank draw a dark architectural portfolio, describing the demise of a tower block designed in a climate of 1960s-era social idealism. An “irreverant and visually arresting” collaboration, and one that’s still bookable via this BAC link.
