Swan Lake

So, it’s the City Showcase new music festival this week, with a great programme of new artists and bands, plus workshops galore for those at the start of their music careers. You’ll find all the information you need about it all in this TW:Guide here. Though things don’t actually kick off until tomorrow, so here’s a few other things to be getting on with in the meantime…

TODAY’S CABARET CHOICES

Timberlina’s Big Bingo Night, Royal Vauxhall Tavern, 8 Oct
It’s hairy legs eleven at the RVT tonight – and every Monday night hereafter till the end of time – as drag-tastic MCs Timberlina and Hey Baylen concoct an “a inimitable and delicious cocktail” of themed bingo, karaoke, pound-shop prizes and things to “make and do”. Ah yes, and it’s all free.

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Neil Mullarkey, Don’t Be Needy Be Succeedy, Comedy Store, 8 Oct
Character maestro Neil Mullarkey once again dons the slightly greasy guise of his be-suited alter ego, ‘Gangsta Motivator’ extraordinaire L Vaughn Spencer, to deliver an evening of ‘self-help and management’ expertise with a notable Partridgian slant. Booking links and additional info here.

Simon Munnery – La Concepta, secret Carnaby Street location, 8-26 Oct
Comic auteur Simon Munnery concocts an avant-garde slab of his ‘non-dining’ scenario,’La Concepta’, for your delectation. A hit in Edinburgh, selected plats du jour include ‘chicken in a casket’, ‘absence de melon’ and ‘bubbles’, and all are served with an ample portion of Munnery’s arch whimsy and wit. He’ll cater to a table of eight each night at a secret eatery near Carnaby Street. Reserve your place via this Soho Theatre address.

TODAY’S DANCE CHOICES

The Royal Ballet – Swan Lake, Royal Opera House, 8 Oct-24 Nov (pictured)
The RB stages Anthony Dowell’s lavish and lastingly popular melodrama, as features feather-light choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Argentine prima ballerina Marianela Núñez has the first night honour of dancing the opposing roles of Odette and Odile, while Brazilian principla Thiago Soares plays her prince. A slightly meagre cache of spare tickets for various performances is available here.

TODAY’S SPOKEN WORD CHOICES

The Josephine Hart Poetry Week, 8-12 Oct, The Arts Theatre
Premiering tonight with a homage to late essayist Josephine Hart via TS Eliot, Michael Grandage’s illustrious spoken word saga features A-list readings by Richard Eyre, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Redmayne, Tom Stoppard and Dominic West (to name but five). Auden, WW1 Poetry, Larkin and selected ‘American poets’ form the basis of four successive nights, all tickets for which are priced at a very reasonable £10. Booking info via this URL.
