Michael Grandage Company – Privates On Parade, Noël Coward Theatre, 1 Dec – 2 Mar 2013
The great Michael Grandage’s new five-play season at the NCT premieres with this, perhaps the programme’s less ‘thespian’ fifth in that it doesn’t (as do the other four) feature Daniel Radcliffe, Jude Law or Judy Dench. Well, so what. In this gauche restaging of Peter Nichols’ loveable 1977 army farce, comic actor Simon Russell Beale dons Dietrichesque drag to star as WW2 Captain in charge of a military Song And Dance Unit in Malaysia.
