Cardinal Burns

It’s offially panto matinee day in East London – oh yes, it is – what with the Hackney Empire, Theatre Royal Stratford East and Broadway Theatre Barking each premiering their respective festive fairy-tales and all. So having thus done one of the family’s cultural five-a-day by teatime, this box of post-pantomime bonbons should sweeten the evening no end…

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Knock2Bag presents… Cardinal Burns, Rich Mix, 1 Dec
Tonight’s Knock2Bag headliners, Channel 4 stars Cardinal Burns, make a real-life cameo after TV-averse telly star Ed Gamble, psuedo-improv queen Claudia O’Doherty, pugnacious Fringe hit David Trent and the perennially sharp tool Pat Cahill. Details here.

TODAY’S FILM CHOICES

Woodystock, Hackney Picturehouse & Attic, 1 Dec
It’s Woody Allen’s birthday today, and Hackney Picturehouse wants us all to commemorate the divisive director’s filmic oeuvre via a screening of ‘Manhattan’, readings from Allen’s now classic New Yorker stories, a live jazz trio, cocktails, and comic commentary by Tony Law, ‘Friday Night Dinner’s Tom Rosenthal and Irma Kurtz. Don’t mind if I do.

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

Kate Nash & After School Club, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, 1 Dec
Alt-popstar Ms Kate Nash plays honorary teacher at her Rock N Roll Saturday school, sharing the secrets of her songwriting and studio techniques with teenage girls, and girls only. Nothing personal, boys… it’s all about statistics, and equality. Info and tickets here.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

Michael Grandage Company – Privates On Parade, Noël Coward Theatre, 1 Dec – 2 Mar 2013
The great Michael Grandage’s new five-play season at the NCT premieres with this, perhaps the programme’s less ‘thespian’ fifth in that it doesn’t (as do the other four) feature Daniel Radcliffe, Jude Law or Judy Dench. Well, so what. In this gauche restaging of Peter Nichols’ loveable 1977 army farce, comic actor Simon Russell Beale dons Dietrichesque drag to star as WW2 Captain in charge of a military Song And Dance Unit in Malaysia. Oh, what a premise. Tickets, a fraction of which are available at a revelatory £10, are available at this link.
