Total Immersion - New From The North

It’s Barbie Day, by which I mean it’s a time to pay 100% plastic respect to the synthetic-haired doll figurine. That, or play with the things London has in its cultural toy box today…

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

Bloc London presents Model 500 and Juan Atkins, secret east London location, 9 Mar – 1 Jun
After a catastrophic no-show of a festival last year, Bloc bosses Alex Benson and George Hull are back to basics and doing what they’ve always done right: parties. Tonight’s is the first of 10 such parties, and is scored techno DJ Juan Atkins, who’s playing twice, once as his usual self, and again as his live alias Model 500. Latter Bloc fetes will feature the likes of Detroit-based minimalist Omar S, and avant garde bass aces Shackleton and Applebim. Details and tickets here.

Total Immersion – New From The North, Barbican Hall, 9 Mar (pictured)
The Barbican takes a metaphorical dip in this all-day, all-Nordic film and classical music mini-fest. It begins with a screening of the BBC’s Fiona Shaw-starring ‘Hedda Gabler’ adaptation circa 1991, and takes in the BBC Symphony Orchestra playing a new symphony by Danish composer Per Nørgård, plus additional films and rare live recitals. Details and tickets here.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

Peter And Alice, Noel Coward Theatre
A play by John Logan, who wrote the screenplays for ‘Gladiator’, ‘Hugo’ and ‘Skyfall’, and scripted 2010’s Tony-winning ‘Red’, Michael Grandage and Co’s new billing stars drama dame Judi Dench and ‘Perfume’ actor Ben Whishaw as Peter Llewelyn Davies and Alice Lidell, aka the real-life inspirations for Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland respectively, who came face to face at a Lewis Carroll exhibition in 1932. Details and tickets here.
