Clarke Peters in 'Race'

If you’ve ever wanted to learn exactly what it is that makes turtles and tortoises thrive in natural and/or artificial habitats, today is the day to do it. And so, with all respect to land and sea-scaling amphibians everywhere, we’ve taken a peep beneath London’s cultural shell to reveal the following…

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Gina Yashere – Laughing To America, Udderbelly Southbank, 23-25 May
She may be big in LA, but Gina Yashere is still ‘real’, and, having watched Britain from afar (ie on TV) for the past year or so, will be airing her real-est views on various trans-Atlantic ‘media events’ (The London Olympics, the Savile scandal, ‘Pleb-gate’ and… her new reading glasses) in a way that only a happy, healthy and wealthy ex pat can. Details and details and tickets here.

The Horne Section, London Wonderground, 23 May
Okay, so this is a fairly glaringly self-evident tip to make, but so what? The Horne Section – that’s master-of-props-and-affable-patter Alex Horne and his big brass band – are great, every time, and they will be again this time. That is, tonight at the bankside marvel-realm that is London’s one and only tent of dreams, the Wonderground. Details and tickets here.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

Race, Hampstead Theatre, 23-29 Jun
Actor Clarke Peters (aka TV’s fave miniature bureau-carving sleuth Lester Freamon) plays a lawyer in Pullitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s pacy new crime drama. As per its stark title, it’s a sharp-angle look at ethnicity, as a black man is accused of rape by a white woman. Details and tickets here.
