By TW Editorial | Published on Thursday 21 February 2013
So, tis the last day of Feb 2013. And it was a fine Feb, as Febs go, wasn’t it? Talking of fine things, savour this hand-made hamper of London’s very err… finest cultural extravagances…
TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES
Will Franken – Things We Did Before Reality, Soho Theatre, 28 Feb – 9 Mar
Part actor, part character comic, part seer-in-disguise, extraordinarily versatile (and silly) American emigre Will Franken‘s new show is a kaleidoscopic narrative of weird personalities (vicars, tarts, the lot), clever sketches and – hidden within all that – pertinent social critique. Details and tickets here.
TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES
Longing, Hampstead Theatre, 28 Feb – 13 Apr
Director Nina Raine looks to reprise her acclaimed collaboration (a la last year’s ‘Jumpy’) with actress Tamsin Grieg via novelist William Boyd’s first ever stage script, a take on two provincial comic stories by Chekhov. Details and tickets here.
Paper Dolls, Tricycle Theatre, 28 Feb – 13 Apr (pictured)
Featuring a script by Sundance Institute President Phillip Himberg, this strange and ‘exotic’ musical-within-a-play stars a real-life-inspired band of Filipino migrants living in Israel. By day, they take care of elderly Jews, and by night… they’re a “sassy” drag act. Details and tickets here.
Purple Heart, Gate Theatre, 28 Feb – 6 Apr
Tonight, The Gate hosts the British premiere of Pullitzer Prize-winning playwright Bruce Norris’s ‘Purple Heart’, with in-theatre AD Christopher Hayden in the directorial chair. Set in the 1970s US Midwest, it’s a portrait of a Carla, a woman widowed by the Vietnam war, and her infant son. Details and tickets here.
