Today in London: Tuesday 23 October 2012
By TW Editorial | Published on Thursday 18 October 2012
It’s international iPod Day (ie eleven years since the first iPod was so momentously ‘unveiled’), which most likely means something celebratory is going on across London’s many, many Apple stores right now. Free party snacks, megabites, or something. But if that’s not quite sufficient, here are several extra ways to appreciate our nation’s fair capital on this most digital of anniversary days…
TODAY’S CABARET CHOICES
Dina Martina – Moribund, Soho Theatre, 23 Oct – 3 Nov
Liza-alike Dina Martina delights with a new repertoire of bold and brash cabaret grotesquerie. A sell-out in the USA, ‘Moribund’ looks poised to win as many fans across its ten-night Soho Theatre stint, details and booking info for which is all stashed at this web link.
TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES
Get Comedy – Charity Comedy Night, Boatshow Comedy Club, The Tattershall Castle, 23 Oct
The very fine Get Comedy summons a seaworthy roster in aid of Get Connected, a helpline charity for under 25s. I say “seaworthy”, because it’s all happening aboard the Tattershall Castle, an ‘actual boat’ moored by Embankment Station. ThreeWeeks Editors’ Award winner Alexis Dubus hosts another TW winner Patrick Monahan as headliner and special guests Dan Mitchell, Chris Martin, Stuart Goldsmith and ‘Gap Yah’ author/Get Connected patron Matt Lacey in what looks to be an unsinkable night on the Thames. Tickets here.
TODAY’S FILM CHOICES
The Royal Ballet – Swan Lake, various cinemas, 23 Oct
The Royal Opera House’s 2012/2013 Live Cinema Season begins with a number of screenings around town of the RBS’s Anthony Dowell-choreographed interpretation of ‘Swan Lake’, as is in live residence now (and till 24 Nov) at the House’s Covent Garden HQ. The majority of London chain and independent picturehouses are showing it tonight, so refer to this list to chose your most convenient viewing point.
TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES
Foxes & Faye, White Heat, Madame Jojo’s, 23 Oct (pictured)
Swedish ‘sångerska’ Faye and the Sony-signed Foxes, each a superlative alt-pop prospect in her own right, will both play live at London’s White Heat club night tonight, so that’s nice. It takes place at Madame Jojo’s, which is in Soho, by the way. Nothing whatsoever is preventing you from buying tickets at this link, or from viewing Foxes’ new video ‘Echo’:
