Today in London: Wednesday 10 October 2012

If you thought today was Wednesday 10 Oct, you’re mistaken. It’s actually World Porridge Day, a novelty day with a non-novelty message in that its aim is to raise cash to buy nourishing food for African children. So now that we’ve all considered that cause (and preferably donated something to it), why not have a look at what’s going on in London in the next 24 hours:

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Danny Bhoy – Dear Epson, Bloomsbury Theatre, 10-12 Oct
Scottish saviour of beef-flavoured Monster Munch Danny Bhoy must be so sick of having the words “charming”, “likeable” and “subtle” heaped upon his every comic move; so sick, in fact, that he’s scripted a show about his many other “little annoyances” as a means of venting various frustrations. ‘Dear Epson’ is a set of very British letters of petty complaint, and no one, especially not Easyjet, is safe.

Deborah Frances-White – How To Get Almost Anyone To Want To Sleep With You, Leicester Square Theatre, 10 Oct
Last heard broaching her lapse from religion in ‘Cult Following’, Deborah Frances-White shares her insights on the always dicey theme of sex (and its many various sub-sects) in this instructional new routine. She’s been refining it via month by month dates at the LST, so book tickets for October’s show via this link.

TODAY’S FILM CHOICES

BFI London Film Festival, various venues, 10-21 Oct
So this is it, film lovers. Hollywood’s A-list elite are out in style beside the world’s independent cineastes on a rather fine LFF’ programme, as tonight features anarchic French comedie ‘Le Grand Soir’ and the gala Leicester Square premiere of Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’. Natural disaster fantasy ‘Beasts Of The Southern Wild’, Michael Haneke’s lovelorn ‘Amour’ and – most of all – Billy Murray’s cigarette-clenching take on Franklin D Roosevelt in ‘Hyde Park On Hudson’ stand tall amid a glut of further filmic thrills. TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

City Showcase, various venues, 9-13 Oct
New music festival City Showcase continues today with workshops by day at the Gibson Guitar Studio, and gigs galore in the evening. Particularly look out for James Michael, Daniela Brooker, Josephine and Alexander Wolfe at The Borderline, and Magazine Gap, Danny Shah, The New Union and Boy Cloud Kid at the 100 Club. Check out the full TW:Guide to City Showcase for more information.

Aphex Twin, Barbican, 10 Oct (pictured)
Aphex Twin, aka Richard James, conducts the 40-piece Heritage Orchestra And Choir in a ‘Remote Orchestra’ concert, as first seen in Poland last year. He’ll do so via remote control, creating a ‘visual score’ and remixing it in real time. The performance will also feature ‘Interactive Tuned Feedback Pendulum Array’, also known as James’ interpretation of American maestro Steve Reich’s 1963 piece ‘Pendulum Music’. Further details on the one-off date are available here.
