LS Lowry's 'Industrial Landscape'

It’s a fairly arty day in the life of London’s ‘what’s on’ diary, this, starting at the door of ‘Dalston House’, the Barbican’s new 3D installation and parallel season at large. Sited on a vacant lot on Ashwin Street, Argentine artist Leandro Erlich has designed a scale replica of a facade like one that might’ve graced Ashwin’s Victorian terraces. It’s horizontal and walkable/climbable on, and has mirrors overhead so it looks like you’re scaling the building vertically. Cool, right?
And now, some other ‘cool’ things to look at and do, arts-wise, in London today…

TODAY’S ART CHOICES

Lowry And The Painting Of Modern Life, Tate Britain, 26 Jun – 20 Oct (pictured)
Advance booking over at the Tate’s major new Lowry love-in is advisable; this is the first show of its kind since the artist’s death in 1976. Born in Lancashire 88 years earlier, his spidery cityscapes and portraits of day-to-day insutrial life (‘Coming Out Of School’, ‘The Pond’) are all on display, as are ‘significant loans’. Details and tickets here.

Vermeer And Music: The Art Of Love And Leisure, National Gallery, 26 Jun – 8 Sep
The National Gallery’s answer to the Tate’s Lowry-based bid to attract the most art-fans this peak season is this; an array of paintings by the Dutch master (and his contemporaries) paired with live tinkering on virginals, guitars and lutes by the Academy Of Ancient Music. Details and tickets here.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

The Moment Of Truth, Southwark Playhouse, 26 Jun – 30 Jul
The Southwark Playhouse and New Actors Company polish off this ‘lost’ 1951 play by Peter Ustinov, giving a high topical shine to its driving mechanisms – war, propaganda and politics, which are cased tight inside a claustrophobic cabinet office poised to fall. Details and tickets here.
