TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Paul Zerdin – Puppet Master, Bloomsbury Theatre, 3 Oct
As one dummy larks about on stage at the O2, so too will ventriloquist and Royal Variety fave Paul Zerdin’s puppet pals be regaling crowds at the Bloomsbury Theatre. Nice to have options on a Wednesday evening, isn’t it?

Comic promoter Knock2Bag’s eerie flair for booking very good comedians at the very best value prevails once again, as it presents TW Edinburgh cover star Tony Law – live and at a price of £8 – on the eve of the Soho Theatre debut of his Edinburgh show ‘Maximum Nonsense’ (4 Oct). Josh Widdicombe, Oyster Eyes, Mark Cooper Jones, Ed Gamble, Chris Kendall and Sara Pascoe complete a real bill-and-a-half. And did we mention, it’s all just £8.

Cabaret, Savoy Theatre, 3 Oct-19 Jan
This new production of Rufus Norris’ 2006 staging of ‘Cabaret’ sees Will Young and ex-‘Eastender’ Michelle Ryan star as the wartime Berlin-based Kit Kat Club’s Emcee and star attraction Sally Bowles respectively, each making his/her West End debut in what’s sure to be a dark and fascinating coming-out-party. Opening this week for a so far confirmed three and half month run.

Charley’s Aunt, Menier Chocolate Factory, 3 Oct-10 Nov
Mathew Horne doffs his foppish headmaster character a la BBC series ‘Bad Education’ for that of Lord Fancourt Babberley in a new staging of Brandon Thomas’ popular farce. Ian Talbot directs Horne, Jane Asher and a Hale-less Norman Pace in this comedy caper which, having just had its press night, is now fully operational.

Images 336, Somerset House, 3-28 Oct
Housed in the Terrace Rooms space, this free admission expo flaunts the ‘Best Of British Illustration’ by the 50 shortlisted winners of the AOI’s flagship contest ‘Images’. The event will also feature ticketed make-and-do workshops for adults and children alike, and Sunday talks by featured artists.
