The Shining

Love or hate Halloween and its sugary all-American-style trappings, you can’t deny it’s a damn fine premise for a themed movie party. Secret Cinema‘s much-coveted Autumn season starts tonight and – while that sold out a while back – the Shoreditch Aubin is catering an ‘edible’ screening of Tim Burton’s ‘Beetlejuice’, as is also being shown at the also Shoreditch-based Water Poet as part of a ‘Hocus Pocus’ double feature. What’s more, bespoke hosts the Flicker Club present Jan Svankmajer’s cracked looking-glass animation ‘Alice’ at Stoke Newington Town Hall.

And on that note, why the hell not eyeball some other ghastly and ghostly goings-on…

Day Of The Dead Festival, Old Vic Tunnels, 31 Oct – 3 Nov
The Old Vic revels in all-things Dia de las Muertos via this four-day fright fiesta, as features live music by headliners Rodrigo y Gabriela; arts installations by the Le Gun collective, Hew Lock and Nancy Fouts; and an adentro market kitchen hosted by Mexican chain Wahaca. Families are invited to take part in daytime kids’ classes, while cocktails and late-night sets by the Communion DJs are also reserved for after-dark festivities. Italian maestro Ennio Morricone’s cult B-movie scores are re-vamped in honour of it being Halloween and all, as soprano Fiona Staniland and band match a live soundtrack to various vintage horror visuals. Details at this page.

A pre-midnight (well, 8.45pm) screening of Kubrick’s seminal hotel room horror, and a chance to preview the 1980 film’s new and uncut version prior to its official re-release. Guests will also appreciate cocktails, ‘occult music’ and a fancy dress contest (unmasking at 7pm). Info here.

The Good Neighbour – Adults-Only Halloween Special, Battersea Arts Centre, 31 Oct
A much darker image of its family-appropriate counterpart, this undead edition of the BAC’s ‘Good Neighbour’ experience adds a choice measure of alcohol, DJs and fancy dress to its character-led expeditions. Tickets still available here.

Nosferatu, Barbican, 31 Oct – 3 Nov
Back at the Barbican for a third time, Polish drama troupe TR Warsawa times its dracular Stoker spin-off to coincide with Halloween night. Director Grzegorz Jarzyna and cast shine an eerie light on myth and reality alike.
