And the LDN-based events the ThisWeek team is tipping today are….
ART: British Folk Art | Tate Britain | 10 Jun – 31 Aug
The Tate celebrates Great (and small) British art of the folkloric kind, flipping back through the annals of history to give the nation back its first major showcase of in-land folk art. Amongst over 100 pots, paintings and paraphernalia on show till late-August are sculptures made out of mutton bones, a thatched and larger-than-life statue of King Alfred, a collection of votive ‘god in a bottle’ objects. Details and tickets here.
COMEDY: Tom Rosenthal – БЛАГОДАРЯ | Soho Theatre | 10-14 Jun
Tom Rosenthal, aka the gawky one off of ‘Plebs’ and ‘Friday Night Dinner’ (which incidentally is back on TV in a few weeks), chooses a trip he once took to Bulgaria as the topic of tonight’s show. “Let him tell you about it whilst you drink”, states the reassuringly vague ‘БЛАГОДАРЯ’ billing. Details and tickets here.
DANCE: Akram Khan Company – ITMOI | Sadler’s Wells Theatre | 10-14 Jun (pictured)
No, don’t worry, ‘ITMOI’ isn’t like ‘YOLO’ or anything, it’s only an acronym for ‘In The Mind Of Igor’, master choreographer Akram Khan’s ‘Rite Of Spring’-inspired show. Featuring a specially-commissioned new score by Jocelyn Pool, Nitin Sawhney and Ben Frost, it’s based on the way in which Stravinsky dynamised and changed the classical norm, taking that blueprint and twisting it into wild new shapes. Details and tickets here.
