COMEDY: Sadwave feat Trevor Lock/Harry Deansway/Luke McQueen/Lee Kern, Trattoria Luigi, 11 Dec
Several of the stand-up scene’s least cool degenerates – surreal circuit fixture Trevor Lock, one time Fixer Harry Deansway, fearless weirdist Luke McQueen and ‘Celebrity Bedlam’ prankmaster Lee Kearn – supply few thrills but lots of LOLs in this new showcase, which in short is – runs its billing – a “funny night run by ugly people”. DANCE: The Wind In The Willows, Duchess Theatre, 11 Dec – 1 Feb 2014
Dancers, dressed as animals? No, not naff. Think of ‘The Lion King’, and/or the fact that this five-and-overs-tailored adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s cuddly creature feature is credited to Royal Ballet star Will Tuckett, and features narration by Andrew Motion. Having originally played to great acclaim at the Royal Opera House, it now vrooms over the the West End, as no other ROH show has done before, ever. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: Blink, Soho Theatre, 11 Dec – 11 Jan 2014
Phil Porter’s “beautiful, hilarious and voyeuristic” play, which got a huge thumbs up both during its previous Soho run and at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, is about a young non-couple’s strange love story, which unfurls against London’s oft-lonesome skyline. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: The Last March, Southwark Theatre, 11 Dec – 4 Jan 2014
Tinder Theatre treads a fine line between comedy, tragedy and the threat of tastelessness in this spirited and stiff-upper-lipped re-telling of Captain Scott’s and company’s failed expedition to the South Pole. Luckily, the production stops miles short of bad taste, and boldly follows the journey from its hopeful beginnings to its bleak, snow-blown end. Details and tickets here.
