ART: An American In London – Whistler And The Thames, Dulwich Picture Gallery, 16 Oct – 12 Jan (pictured)
Whilst American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler is probably most famed for a portrait of his mother, it’s his time in London in 1859-ish that’s this major showcase’s main order of the day. An array of rarely-on-display drawings, prints, pastels and pantings culminates in his portraits of iconic Nocturnes of Thames-side sights like Battersea Bridge and Chelsea. Painting a broad sonic horizon via this mixed Fabric bill for all seasons, Icelandic nouveau classicist Olafur Arnalds and stellar sitar player (and daughter of Ravi) Anoushka Shankar play selections from their solo back caches and respective new LPs – his, ‘For Now I Am Winter’, and hers, ‘Traces Of You’.
