COMEDY: The Ugly Animal Preservation Society, The Book Club, 23 Oct
A comedy night with a creature-friendly bent, this evening’s Ugly Animal Preservation Society will see attractive mammalian types Simon Watt, Sarah Bennetto, Steve Mould, Jonny Berliner, Martin Crosser, Helen Arney and Iszi Lawrence all campaigning on behalf of a different furry freak of nature, in a bid for their species to become ‘Hackney’s Ugly Mascot’. FESTIVAL: Calm Down, Dear – A Festival Of Feminism, Camden People’s Theatre, 23 Oct – 10 Nov
The CPT’s three week season of feminist celebration, critique and debate mixes elements of cabaret, theatre, stand-up and performance of all kinds. It all kicks off tonight via live artist Louise Orwin’s ‘Pretty Ugly’, a “tender and inappropriate” research piece on the digital phenomenon of ‘rating’ by appearance only, and TheatreState’s ‘The Fanny Hill Project’, which an impressed ThreeWeeks described (on seeing it at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe) as a deliberate assault, a wicked, morbid satire on beauty stereotypes”. MUSIC: CLoSer Film & Orchestra – The New Babylon, Village Underground, 23 Oct
The City Of London Sinfonia follow Dimitri Shostakovich’s jazz and cabaret-trimmed original score to 1929 silent film ‘The New Babylon’, widely viewed as his most bold and satirical work. The film itself, which is set in the 1871 Paris Commune, lights on a pair of tragic lovers split by barricades. Details and tickets here.

SEArED Theatre revive David Storey’s quiet masterpiece of 1970, a tragic and darkly droll thesis on the human mind, in which five apparently unrelated characters share superficial chit-chat in a garden, revealing the very essence of their selves. Details and tickets here.
