RICHARD MARSH: WINGMAN
Some members of the ThisWeek team have recently returned from Edinburgh where we've been busy covering the Festival for our sister publication ThreeWeeks Edinburgh. One of the plays we heard good things about was 'Wingman', by award winning (don't forget that) writer and slam poet Richard Marsh.

But, just because the Fringe has ended, doesn't mean the show is over. The play begins a run at Soho Theatre next week, so I caught up with Richard to find out more about the piece, as well as his plans for the future.. You can read the interview here.

'Wingman' is on at Soho Theatre from 2-20 Sep. See the venue website for details and tickets.
FRIDAY 29 AUGUST 2014 >>
CABARET: The Not Television Festival | Chelsea Theatre | 29-31 Aug (pictured)
Bringing over a heap of solo acts still ripe from the Edinburgh Fringe, this remote festival of comedy, cabaret and physical theatre is led, terrifyingly, by the bloblike spectre of pugnacious clown Red Bastard, who (try to keep in mind) is really a non-scary human man in disguise named Eric Davis. Also prominent on the bill are go-go gameshow host Miss Behave, a shamelessly heathen service by The Sunday Assembly, Tomás Ford's dizzying Electric Midnight Cabaret, and Iranian writer-actor Nassim Soleimanpour, who reprises his acclaimed one-man show on isolation and exile, 'White Rabbit, Red Rabbit'. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Raw Power Festival | Tufnell Park Dome | 29-31 Aug
Baba Yaga's Hut pitches on a temp basis at the Dome for the latest cycle of its trippy psych weekender, presenting leftfield elders Acid Mothers Temple, longhaired rock coven Bo Ningen and Liverpool noisemakers Clinic as headliners; and besides them, the likes of The Oscillation, Shopping, Flamingods, and Black Moth. Plus on the side; DJs from pirate radio stations NTS and Resonance FM, a 'giant' merch area, and an open-air BBQ. And beer, litres and litres of beer. Details and tickets here.

THEATRE: Spoiling | Theatre Royal Stratford East | 29 Aug – 31 Sep
Also moving on from a ticket-shifting run at the E-Burgh Fringe, John McCann's uncannily-timed power-play imagines a newly-independent Scotland, as the renegade Scottish Foreign Minister prepares to make a high-profile speech on her nation's relationship with the remaining UK. Will she speak against the party? Or give in and toe the line? Details and tickets here.
SATURDAY 30 AUGUST 2014 >>

FILM: The Night Is Young | Barbican | 30 Aug (pictured)
The Barbican hosts (as the finale to its 'Eye-Popping Colour!' season) this one-off 4pm showing of Leos Carax's 'The Night Of Young' circa 1986. Defined by its bright-hued cinematography, it stars Michel Piccoli as an ageing gangster who traps Alex, the younger son of his slain comrade, into a plot to break into a lab and steal an AIDS-like virus. Juliette Binoche plays Piccoli's mistress who, in inveitable French 'ménage à trois'tradition, Alex falls in love with. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Nina Kraviz + Midland + Marcel Dettman | Fabric | 30 Aug
The high tsarina of Detroit-style electronica, Ms Nina Kraviz, takes the 'Room 1 Headliner' title at tonight's Fabric-xtravaganza, backed by pivotal London DJ Midland and William Kouam Djoko, aka the host of Amsterdam super-club Trouw. Spaces 2 and 3, meanwhile, will be piloted by techno maestro Marcel Dettman and relatively fresh-faced label Danse Club. Details and tickets here.

THEATRE: The Comedy Of Errors | Shakespeare's Globe | 30 Aug – 12 Oct
A classic case of Shakespearean 'mistaken identity' bants, 'The Comedy Of Errors' (here directed by Blanche McIntyre) is a long and complicated chain of slapstick mishaps co-starring estranged twin bros Antipholus and Antipholus, and their manservants (estranged twins Dromio and Dromio) who are all thrown into a city known for its sorcery. Duly, beautifully-scripted chaos follows. Details and tickets here.
SUNDAY 31 AUGUST 2014 >>

FILM: Routes – Dancing To New Orleans | BFI Southbank | 31 Aug
British director Alex Reuben's intimate doc follows a road-trip he made south from New England to a post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, shooting film all the way. Closing off the BFI's 'Gotta Dance, Gotta Dance!' programme, 'Dancing To New Orleans' celebrates The States's diverse dance lineage, and finds Reuben filming everyday Americans as they express themselves via a variety of steps and styles. The main film screening is followed by 'Que Pasa' and 'Line Dance', a pair of animated shorts also by Reuben, and 'Newsreel: Melt Down', which he recorded live during 2011's LDN-based Dance Umbrella festival. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Chad Vangaalen | Oslo | 1 Sep
Calgary's #1 garage-rock scrap man, the amazing Chad VanGaalen, plays live at Oslo all for the love (and sales) of his brillo latest LP, 'Shrink Dust', which is also the score to an animated sci-fi film he made titled 'Translated Log Of Inhabitants'. Details and tickets here.

OPERA: Aikainen | Arcola Theatre | 1-3 Sep
A multimedia meditation on time and temporality with a score generated by 3D-printed instruments, this experimental movement by Miika Hyytiäinen is (obvs) no ordinary opera. It plays on as part of the Arcola's innovative Grimeborn festival, and features real-life vocalists Annika Fuhrmann and Frauke Aulbert singing against three voices on a 3D video screen. Details and tickets here.
TUESDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2014 >>

COMEDY: The Lost Treasures Of The Black Heart | The Black Heart, Camden Town | 2 Sep
Following a stint sailing the high seas of the Edinburgh Fringe, Cap'n Josie Long re-opens her still-golden comedic trove, inviting fixed guest Nathaniel Metcalfe and some other TBC figures to dig into its spoils. And the premise of 'Lost Treasures', by the by, is that comedians present short sets revering people/things they think don't get the credit they deserve. Details and tickets here.

FESTIVAL: Unlimited | Southbank Centre | 2-7 Sep (pictured)
A festival highlighting the vision, originality and capabilities of disabled artists, the SB Centre's Unlimited will this year feature its patented, glass-ceiling-smashing array of theatre, dance, literature, visual art, stand-up and music. Leading the itinerary are the likes of Robert Softley Gale (who'll share his show 'If These Spasms Could Speak', a collation of real-life narratives of disability), playwright Julie McNamara's wry portrait of her mother's Alzheimer's disease, a "theatrical piece that plays on life's crutches" by Claire Cunningham, and 'The Dinner Party Revisited', which will see performance artist and character actress Katherine Araniello reprising her TV-screened soiree of 2011. THEATRE: Fully Committed | Menier Chocolate Factory | 3 Sep – 15 Nov
TV's Kevin Bishop gives his snappiest NYC accent as Sam Peliczowski, the man manning the reservations line at an eatery that's essentially Manhattan's Chiltern Firehouse, only not real. Add in a parade of blaggers and B-list celebs, a tyrannical boss and Sam's failing acting career and well, a trip to 'Fully Committed' seems all set to be one heck of a great dinner date. There'll be a live piano score playing alongside the films, which will be shown, aptly, at the Dog Kennel Hill Open Space in Camberwell!
