Poet Simon Armitage’s elegiac theatre piece, a one-time radio play written about the late Sophie Lancaster, who in 2007 was beaten to death by a gang because she looked ‘different’. ‘Black Roses’ incorporates the words of Sophie’s mother, Sylvia Lancaster, into prose by Armitage.
