The Love Song of R Buckminster Fuller

TODAY IN LONDON alt-rock titans Yo La Tengo and acclaimed filmmaker Sam Green, real-life Santa Klaus Henning Wehn, spoken-word curators Writers Bloc and ED BALLS feature in the following TW-recommended events…

COMEDY: Henning Wehn’s Authentic German Christmas Do, Leicester Square Theatre, 8 Dec
Henning Wehn decks the halls with lashings of rosy-cheeked Germanic cheer, making merry and singing renditions of of the Fatherland’s most favourite Christmas carols. Think ‘Oh Tannenbaum’, ‘Stille Nacht – heilige Nacht’, and ‘Klingglöckchen klingelingelingelingelingelingelingeling’. Details and tickets here.

COMEDY: Writers Bloc – Laughter File, Canal Cafe Theatre, 8 Dec
Whilst it’s usually straight-faced, Writers Bloc tonight takes on a comic tinge, and includes such amusing spoken-word pieces and mini-dramas as Alex Head’s ‘Merry’, Rob Goodes’ ‘Boring News’ and Samuel Jameson’s ‘Highsight’, which is a great thing. Details and tickets here.

FILM: Yo La Tengo – The Love Song of R Buckminster Fuller, Barbican, 8 Dec
The most reliable band in the alt-rock realm, Yo La Tengo, live-score what’ll probably prove one of the only British showings of Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sam Green’s ‘The Love Song of R Buckminster Fuller’. Green himself will be on hand to narrate and change slides, driving this so-called ‘live documentary’ on its titular subject, twentieth century futurist, engineer, inventor and designer, and his lifelong utopian vision of radical social change. Details and tickets here.

MUSIC: Celebrity Carnival, Kings Place, 8 Dec
Well, here’s a party. Ed Balls (yes, the Shadow Chancellor), at a piano, having a sing-song with pro ivory-tinkler Lucy Parham, who’s behind this Christmassy caper. She’ll be accompanied by Balls and a host of other famous faces, not least Juliet Stevenson, Edward Fox, Alistair McGowan, Simon Russell Beale and Editor at The Guardian
Alan Rusbridger for a morning of good times and classical recitals. Details and tickets here.
