THREE LIVE THINGS

Voces8 – The Passing Of The Year | King’s Place | 2 Oct (pictured)
Ah, every time I listen to this classical choral ensemble doing their singing thing it sends a shiver down my spine and sometimes even brings a tear to my eye. This week they are appearing in person at King’s Place, with limited tickets available to allow for social distancing. There are two shows, and one is sold out, so hurry…. that said, if you don’t make it in time, there’s also an option to tune in online. See this page here.

Night At The Sweet Lagoon + Starry Starry Eyes | Battersea Arts Centre | 30 Sep
Another courtyard event at Battersea Arts Centre and I am shamelessly going for another Free Association show (I am pretty sure I selected another of theirs recently). A fab sounding double bill of improvvy stuff with ‘Night At The Sweet Lagoon’, an improvised play in the style of Tennessee Williams, followed by ‘Starry Starry Eyes’, an improvised singing talent show. See this page here quickly to make sure you have your tickets.

The Great Gatsby | Immersive LDN | from 1 Oct
Immersive LDN’s hit show returns with COVID-19 related rules in place, so don’t forget your facemask (and also gloves, I think). I expect a number of you will have enjoyed this already, but no doubt there’s at least a few stragglers who were always planning to take it in at some point. If you are one of those, and desperate for some live entertainment, now’s your chance. See this page here for info and to book.

THREE MUSICAL THINGS

The Theatre Channel Episode One | 2 Oct
This one is for those of you who are fans of musical theatre, as The Theatre Channel has West End stars lining up to sing for you. A number of half hour digitally delivered installments are planned at intervals throughout the autumn, with the first one happening this week and featuring the likes of Matt Henry, Jenna Russell and Tarinn Callender. See this page here for more information.

Islander: A New Musical Cast Album | via Spotify, iTunes, Amazon etc (pictured – image by Ali Wright)
Edinburgh Fringe fans among our readership might be familiar with ‘Islander’, the new musical that was a big hit at the Festival in 2019. The show was set to tour in the autumn of 2020, but that has had to be postponed (I think you know why) and so they’ve released a cast recording to keep you going until you get to see the actual show. It’s set on a Scottish island and the tunes are aptly folky and brilliant. Listen to it here.

Mithras Trio | Conway Hall | 4 Oct
Some more classical sounds for you now courtesy of Conway Hall’s Sunday Concert series, currently still happening online. The award winning Mithras Trio make their venue debut and perform Haydn’s ‘Trio In E Hob XV:28’, Mendelssohn’s ‘Trio No.2 In C Minor Op. 66’ and Tchaikovsky’s ‘Trio In A Minor Op. 50’. For more information about the event, and to book yourself into it, see this page here.

THREE THEATRICAL THINGS

Lost Dog: In A Nutshell | The Place Online | until 22 Oct (pictured)
“Sitting alone in an empty auditorium, a man explains to an unseen future generation what live theatre was – reliving moments that had been particularly powerful to him personally and lamenting the loss of real-life connections in a world where nobody is allowed near one another”. This film from The Place, conceived in the early days of the pandemic, is described as “half eulogy, half lecture”, and has been available since last week. You’ve still got plenty of time to see it though, click here.

New Stuff | The Cockpit | monthly
The Cockpit’s monthly ‘New Stuff’ events are currently happening online with the next one due to take place this week, on 4 Oct. The regular night showcases new pieces of written work from writers and theatre makers, generally early drafts, which are presented as rehearsed readings. Tickets are just a pound, though you can donate more when you check out. See this page to book.

Continuity | Finborough Theatre | until 31 Dec
“Pádraig Devlin is a dissident Irish Republican, who begins to have doubts about his commitment to The Cause after he meets and falls in love with a woman from Barcelona. Soon after meeting her, Pádraig botches three assignments in a row. The other members of his terrorist cell decide to test the love-struck Pádraig’s commitment”. Another recording from the Finborough, this time this critically acclaimed piece from 2017. This and other shows are available to watch via this page here.

THREE IN A MIXED BAG

Birthday Girls’ House Party Podcast | from 30 Sep
One of our favourite comedy trios (yes, we have a few favourite comedy trios) Birthday Girls – an act that we first discovered up at the old edfringe – restart their House Party podcast this week, and there’s probably no better time for it given that we’re probably going to need lots of funny stuff to keep us going through the winter. Each episode has a different theme and nice guests (past ones have included Lucy Pearman, Josh Widdicombe and James Acaster). The new ones will appear here from 30 Sep and you can also listen to back-issues there too.

In Someone Else’s Shoes: Edinburgh’s Unexpected Summer | Traverse Festival | 28 Sep-25 Oct (pictured)
“We all have a unique relationship to where we live, work or play – even as we share that place with thousands or millions of others. Our city is ours, and to see someone else’s view of it we must walk its streets in their shoes, see its sights with their eyes and truly hear their voices”. Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre continues with its online Festival and this immersive video project is the latest work to become available. Click here.

Philip Pullman’s Grimm Tales Online | Unicorn Theatre | 5 Oct-21 Feb
And finally: one for the kids, who no doubt could do with things to occupy them now that the weather is intermittently rainy and grim. These are “theatrical readings” of Grimm tales, adapted by Philip Pullman and delivered by Nadia Albina, Le Gateau Chocolat, Colin Morgan, Cecilia Noble, Andy Umerah and Susan Wokoma.. They are free via YouTube, see this page here for info and a link.
