Three To Stream 2-8 Jun: Theatrical Treats, Upcoming Comedy Events, Already Available Comedy

By | Published on Friday 29 May 2020

We’re still recommending great culture online while London’s venues remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of these online shows are free to access but with options to make donations. If you can afford to support the performers and producers behind this entertainment that would be brilliant.

THREE THEATRICAL TREATS

Grimm’s Collecting Agency | Teatro Vivo and Croydonites
‘Grimm’s Collecting Agency’ should have been walking the streets of Croydon during March 2020, interviewing people in order to make their stories into a show for the Croydonites festival. Instead Teatro Vivo found a way to do it online and turned their immersive street show into a film featuring interviews with people from across the nation. “Collecting stories is a family business for the Grimms, handed down through the generations”. See it here.

Brixton House’s Digital Lockdown | 4-25 Jun (pictured, image by Simon Annand)
You’re probably aware that Ovalhouse has moved house? Well, the venue will, henceforth, be called Brixton House, so don’t forget that once we’re all out seeing live shows again. In the meantime, though, this month they’re looking back at their Ovalhouse output and delivering four recordings of excellent shows for you via internet means, starting on 4 Jun with a children’s show, ‘Random Selfies’ by Mike Kenny. Each production will be available via the Brixton House website for one week following release. Also, get following the venue’s new Twitter feed here.

A Monster Calls | Bristol Old Vic and The Old Vic | 5-11 Jun
“Thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved away. But now his mum is sick and not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye. Then, one night, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking”. Adapted from the critically acclaimed book by Patrick Ness, this show is available to stream from this Friday at 7.00pm. See this page here.

THREE UPCOMING COMEDY EVENTS

Knock2bag Presents The Moth House | 4 Jun
Pre-recorded but streaming live, this comedy night has a somewhat stellar line up: the likes of Tim Key, Natasia Demetriou, Lou Sanders, Emma Sidi and Adam Hess feature amongst a host of great acts. Read more about the show and book yourself in right about here.

Your Place Comedy | 7 June (pictured, Tim FitzHigham)
Another streaming comedy night, one with a much smaller line up, but one that is perfectly formed – a trio of TW favourites, all of whom we first laid our eyes on up at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe: the brilliant Jo Caulfield and the excellent Simon Evans, compered by the utterly delightful Tim FitzHigham. Head this way to find out more.

Ross Noble’s Brain Dump | Soho Theatre On Demand | from 5 Jun
There have been times in the past when the stand-up of Ross Noble has reduced me to tears. So I was pleased to see that Soho Theatre On Demand is to host six films from the comedian’s ‘Brain Dump’ tour. They’re to be released over four weeks from Friday, each one available for a period of 48 hours. Oh, and half the money is going to UK charity Acting For Others. Nothing on the site as yet, but I suspect the first one will appear here on 5 Jun.

ALREADY AVAILABLE COMEDY THINGS

Funmbi Omotayo: Black And Brit-ish (pictured)
This is another act that we first found out about up at the old edfringe one year (I think it may have been in around 2015) and who very much stole our hearts. So we were very pleased to hear a few days ago that Funmbi Omotayo had released this live comedy special, recorded at the Backyard Comedy Club, for consumption via YouTube. Find and watch it on this page here.

The Lockdown Lock In
The ‘Lockdown Lock In’, a night of comedy, music and poetry, fundraising in aid of the National Autistic Society, premiered a few nights ago on 28 May, but you can still view it on YouTube. And it’s definitely worth it for the immensely good line up of acts, which includes a high proportion of TW favourites, ably hosted by Mark Grimshaw, Edy Hurst, Jonny Collins and John Porter. See Mark Grimshaw’s YouTube Channel here to view and remember to make a donation here.

Hannah Gadsby: Douglas
Well, it’s entirely possible, if you’re a comedy fan, that you’re entirely aware that Hannah Gadsby’s new comedy special very recently arrived on Netflix. Who knows, Netflix might even have emailed you to tell you about it, you know, like they do. But you know what? They didn’t email me about it. They didn’t flag it up in any of my suggestion sections. And I’m an avid comedy consumer, as you might imagine. So, anyway, I thought I would give you a heads-up, in case Netflix are trying to keep this from you too. Head this way, or, you know, search for it on your chosen Netflix-watching device.
