Twelfth Night Live | Maltings Theatre St Albans | 12-14 Jun (pictured)
You might argue that this should be in a “musical theatre” category, because, yes, this is a very musical version of The Bard’s well loved play. The action is set in the 1920s aboard a cruise ship, so you can expect a very jazzy experience, all delivered by the medium of Zoom. Guaranteed to jolly away the blues, I reckon. Book here.

The Merry Wives Of Windsor | Shakespeare’s Globe | until 14 Jun
Another jolly Shakepeare experience for you, also with an early Twentieth Century vibe, originally performed at The Globe in the summer of 2019 and now available to stream via YouTube. I meant to tell you about this last week, but it somehow got missed off, and that means you only have a few days now to see it. Make hay while the sun shines and head this way.

The Madness Of George III | Nottingham Playhouse/National Theatre | 11-18 June
Okay, so I am not sure whether this can be regarded as ‘classic’ or not, because ‘classic’ implies rather aged – you know, like Shakespeare – and Alan Bennett’s play is only about thirty years old. But it feels like a classic, for obvious reasons. I haven’t been mentioning the National Theatre’s online stuff much because I assume you generally know about it, but you know, the occasional reminder seems appropriate. Click here for more.

(It’s Not All) Zoom and Gloom | Roustabout Theatre | 13-14 Jun
“When friends gather together for an online chat with the ever-grumpy Ben, they find that nothing they can say will cheer him up”. And so they go about putting a smile on his face with a little inspiration from the work of Charles Dickens. This is a family comedy for everyone five plus and is to be performed this weekend via Zoom. See this page here for info and to book.

Jane Clegg | Finborough Theatre (pictured)
Unperformed since 1944, St John Ervine’s 1913 play ‘Jane Clegg’ was given a long overdue revival at the Finborough Theatre last year. The title character is a long suffering wife trying to find away to escape her husband’s abuse, neglect and criminality. Heavy themes, but a great play. Watch the recording here.

Lungs | Old Vic Theatre | 26 Jun-4 Jul
Yes, you’re correct: eagle-eyed readers will have spotted that this play isn’t something you can watch this week at all, because it’s not on until 26 Jun. However, ticket sales open this week, at midday on Wednesday 10 Jun, and I have a feeling said tickets might go quickly for this, so if I told you about it nearer the time it might in fact be too late. Anyway, what is it? Well, it’s Claire Foy and Matt Smith reprising their roles in Duncan Macmillan’s play, only this time in a socially distanced manner in an empty auditorium for you to watch via Zoom. The Ethical Case For Basic Income In A Pandemic | Conway Hall
Another great sounding online event from Conway Hall taking a look at the concept of a basic income for all and asking what its effects would be. “What is the moral or ethical case for basic income as a right? Shouldn’t everyone receive a stake in society’s wealth? Could we create a fairer world by granting a guaranteed income to all? What would this mean for our health, wealth and happiness?” Register here.

Fagin’s Twist by Tony Adigun’s Avant Garde Dance | The Place | 11-15 Jun
I don’t know if you will remember it, because it was rather a long time ago, but we interviewed Tony Adigun about this very dance piece when it was on at The Place back in the autumn of 2016. And we are really glad to see that a recording of it will be available via that venue’s website this week, so that – if you missed it then – you can see it now.
