Since – thanks to the BBC’s ‘Great British Bake-Off’ – we’re all baking mad at the moment, it seems apt that it’s National Baking Week at the moment, and will be till Sunday. But, in addition to various demos, free sampling events and cake sales taking place across London this weekend, why not dip into a decorative batch of Friday night culture confections…

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Connecting Conversations with Jo Brand, UCL Cruciform Building, Gower Street, 19 Oct
Having fictionalised her real-life experiences as a psychiatric nurse in self-scripted pseudo sitcom ‘Getting On’, Jo Brand appears in conversation to discourse on her past and present, and the “nature of comedy” at large. Proceeds will go to, quite aptly, to the Camden Psychotherapy Unit. Tickets are available now, and drinks are served afterwards.

Doc Brown & Friends – Knock2Bag Comedy Night, Rich Mix, Shoreditch, 19 Oct
More than surpassing his remit as ‘hip hop comic’, headliner Doc Brown prescribes fast-talking rap satire alongside the also billed Late Night Gimp Fight, Will Franken, Tom Adams, Mae Martin and Sheeps. Advance tickets available here.

TODAY’S MUSIC CHOICES

Nail The Cross V, The Shacklewell Arms, Dalston, 19-20 Oct (pictured)
The fifth edition of this way-too-cool Dalston arts fest will feature sets by elite electrolytes like Slime, Deptford Goth, Dam Mantle, Eaux and oOOoOO (yes, really); all of which means it’s destined to be rad. Stay ahead of the curve by buying £8 tickets here. Oh, and wear something black.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

Best of BE Festival, Rich Mix, 19-20 Oct
Birmingham’s BE Festival collates an outstanding triple-bill of European theatre, presenting Spanish scribe Vladimir Tzekov’s ‘Fantasy No 10; The Beauty Of Life’, ‘L’absent’ by Belgian troupe Compagnie du Geste qui Suave, and A Tres Bandes’ ‘Solfara’. Post-show deliberation (plus drinks), and a performance by critic-approved Swedish absurdists the Scandimaniacs are also on the cards. Details here.

SACRED, Chelsea Theatre, 19 Oct – 16 Feb 2013
A critically-prized season of contemporary theatre debuts with ‘So Below’, a movement/spoken word duet by performance artists Gerard Bell and Karen Christopher. The programme continues well into 2013 with Jeremy Reed and Marc Almond’s ‘Picadilly Bongo’, Michael Pinchbeck’s ‘The Beginning’ and Peter Stuart’s ‘Melancolia’. Details and booking info here.
