Today in London: Saturday 23 March 2013

David Bowie

It is Near Miss Day, aka the same date as when, in 1989, an apocalyptically-apportioned asteroid grazed Planet Earth by only half a million miles. But since it did miss and we’re all still intact (and assuming yesterday didn’t turn out to be an impromptu Hit Day in the world of asteroids), let’s move on and instead feel the deep impact of this trail-blazing list of London’s cultural ephemera…

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Piccadilly Comedy Club presents… Sara Pascoe/Alfie Brown/Duncan Edwards/Sunil Patel, The Comedy Pub, 23 Mar
The extraordinarily ever-excellent Sara Pascoe lends her musical ear to this reasonably-priced night’s comic stylings, as features TW London-quizzed individual Alfie Brown, ThreeWeeks-praised Duncan Edwards and BBC New Comedy Award finalist circa 2012 Sunil Patel. That’s £2.50 per comedian, if my maths is right. Details and tickets here. Details and tickets here.

Potted Potter, Garrick Theatre, 23 Mar – 14 Apr
CBBC’s Daniel ‘Dan’ Clarkson and Jefferson ‘Jeff’ Turner recreate all seven of JK Rowling’s wizardy bestsellers – doing all the characters, even the dragons – and all in a spell-binding (and very silly) seventy minutes. Details and tickets here.

TODAY’S VISUAL ART CHOICES

David Bowie Is, Victoria & Albert Museum, 23 Mar – 11 Aug (pictured)
By strange coincidence given the unexpected comeback, and as a very well-timed means of promoting David Bowie’s new LP ‘The Next Day’, the V&A’s curators have gained ‘unparalleled’ entree to Bowie’s vintage archive. They’ve chosen over 300 items (instruments, LP artwork, hand-drawn video storyboards and the TVD’s various iconic fashions) to display, so go have a gawp. Details and tickets here.
