OK, so we’re done with ghouls and fireworks, and while the Christmas lights may now be on in Oxford Street, festive things won’t properly kick off for a few weeks yet, so let’s put all that behind us and focus on some proper cultural gems…

TODAY’S COMEDY CHOICES

Laughing Boy Comedy Club, Brixton Jamm, 6 Nov
Promoter Off The Kerb endorses the first edition of this new Brixton-based night, featuring brazen ex-Etonian Ivo Graham, self-styled ‘car crash comic’ Nick Helm, TV show pro Paul McCaffrey and Hilary Devey’s fave comedienne, aka the Kate Nash-esque Vikki Stone. RSVP via Facebook.

Nathan Penlington – Choose Your Own Documentary, Southbank Centre, 6-10 Nov
Filmed over the eighteen months it took to trace the secret stashed within a job lot of vintage ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books, Nathan Penlington’s democratic doc screening allows the audience to direct his fascinating quest at every corner, with scores of plot-endings possible. Tickets available here.

Roisin Conaty – Lifehunter, Soho Theatre, 6-10 Nov (pictured)
Roisin Conaty’s favourably-Fringe-reviewed new solo show finds the fast-talking comic philosophising non-stop on life’s pleasures, pains and ‘poxy’ irritants. Bookings here.

TODAY’S THEATRE CHOICES

The Effect, National Theatre, 6 Nov – 23 Feb
‘ENRON’ scribe Lucy Prebble partners once again with director Rupert Goold to present ‘The Effect’, a “clinical romance” – whatever that means – starring one-time ‘Honey To The Bee’ pop-ette, and now serious thespian Billie Piper. Designer Miriam Buether is on staff to create stage sets to complement and enhance this “vibrant theatrical exploration into the human brain via the heart”. Reserve seats here.
