TODAY IN LONDON Secret Theatre and their Tarantino do-over, blues greats Bobby Womack, Van Morrison and err… Mick Hucknall, WW2’s ‘Big Four’ world leaders and David Baddiel all feature in the following TW-recommended events…
COMEDY: David Baddiel – Fame: Not The Musical, Purcell Room (Southbank Centre), 29 Oct – 1 Nov (pictured)
Billed as “a meditation on a life lived in (and out of) fame”, David Baddiel’s long-awaited solo show finds him parodying his footie lad/new man/’token Jew’ press image and the significance, if there’s any, of celebrity. Details and tickets here.
MUSIC: Bluesfest, Royal Albert Hall, 29 Oct – 1 Nov
Leading this week’s/ThisWeek’s festival headlines, it’s Bluesfest, an azure sea of the bluest bluesmen featuring the likes of Robert Plant (and his post-Zep band, the Sensational Shape Shifters), Chris Rea, and tonight’s star, Bobby Womack. You can also catch The Ronnie Wood Band, Natalie Cole, or an all-star collaboration from BluesFest big-timers Van Morrison and Mick Hucknall, who’ll pay homage to late blues great Bobby Bland, who sadly died earlier this year. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: The Potsdam Quartet, Jermyn Street Theatre, 29 Oct – 23 Nov
Set in 1945, at the end of WW2, David Pinner’s narrative of two halves follows Stalin, Truman, Churchill and Atlee (aka ‘the Big Four’) as they try to reach a peacetime treaty, but also a bickering British string quartet in the ante room next door. Details and tickets here.
THEATRE: Secret Theatre, Zone 1 location TBA, 29 Oct – 30 Nov
The Lyric Hammersmith’s ‘Secret Theatre’ season gets the ‘Tarantino treatment’, with a mystery cast recreating a mystery QT film in a mystery location. Whilst the nature of the show will stay a mystery till the very last minute, ticket-buyers will be given clues and an outline of the dress code, venue and such. Details and tickets here.
